Model study of Upper lawn pavilion by Peter and Allison Smithson.

Alison and Peter Smithson were an architect couple that led the British brutalism through the late 20th century by questioning the modernists approach in design and urban planning. The concept of ”as found” or use of context is constantly mentioned throughout their carriers.

Upper Lawn Pavilion is a summer house built with simple materials and technology. It consists of a wooden framed box, clad with zinc that rests on top of an existing stone wall and some parts of an old cottage. The architects built it for themselves and could therefore be a bit more experimental with the design.

The pavilion is a place where one have a piece of ground, a view of the sky, privacy and a clear presence of nature. The placement of the pavilion in combination with its openness blurs the borders of inside and outside.

A collaboration with Lovisa Eriksson. Thank you!
